Different Types of Braces and Their Properties

Braces are used to straighten teeth and improve oral health. Braces apply continuous pressure over time on our teeth to move them in a specific direction. The pressure is formed due to brackets, wires, and elastics used in the braces.

There are several types of braces available in MEAW braces in Los Gatos. Each set of braces is designed in a way to meet individual needs. The most common types of braces are mentioned below.

Different types of braces and their properties

  • Metal braces

Metal braces are very common in orthodontic treatment. They are made out of stainless steel with braces, wires, and elastics to move the teeth. They are generally strong and durable and can be used to treat various malocclusion.

  • Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces are composed of clear materials and are less visible on the teeth than metal braces. The working principle is the same as metal braces but less noticeable.

  • Lingual braces

Lingual braces are generally attached to the back of the teeth. They are less visible than traditional braces and can be customized to fit each patient’s mouth.

  • Invisalign

Invisalign is a clear aligner that uses a series of custom-made removable trays to move the teeth into the correct position slowly. The trays are smooth, comfortable plastic, which is not visible to others.

  • Self-ligating braces

Self-ligating braces work on the mechanism to hold the wire in place, which eliminates the need for elastic bands. These braces are generally comfortable and need fewer adjustments.

  • Damon braces

Damon braces are self-ligating and contain archwires that are designed to move the teeth comfortably and quickly. It also requires fewer adjustments than traditional braces.

  • Suresmile

It is a type of braces that uses advanced imaging technology to make a 3D model of the teeth. It allows the orthodontist to customize the braces to make them fit your teeth’s shape.

  • Palatal expanders

Palatal expanders generally widen the upper jaw and create space for the teeth. They are mostly used for children to correct crossbites or narrow arches.

How to take care of your braces

You should brush your teeth after every meal and floss daily if you have braces. This process will keep your teeth and gums healthy and reduce dental issues.

  • Avoid certain foods

Avoid consuming hard and chewy foods like candy and gum, as they can get stuck between your teeth and damage your braces.

  • Wear a mouthguard

If you are an athlete and play sports regularly, it is important to wear a mouthguard to protect your braces and teeth from damage.
